4 Data-Driven Upsell Strategies to Sell More Meals

So today, I'm unveiling four data-backed upsell strategies that can help you unlock hidden revenue in your meal prep business.

Let's dive in.

Strategy #1: Price Your Upsells at 40-50% of Your Average Product Price

Our data showed a clear trend: upsell products priced at about half the cost of your regular items convert significantly better.

  • Why it works: Customers are more inclined to add an additional item when it's a smaller incremental cost compared to their initial purchase. It's the classic "Would you like fries with that?" approach.
  • Data in action: Merchants with upsells priced at 40-50% of their average product price saw conversion rates up to 9.27%, compared to just 2.7% for those with higher-priced upsells.

Action Step: Review your menu and identify items that you can offer as upsells within that sweet spot of 40-50% of your average product price.

Strategy #2: Feature Existing Menu Items as Upsells

Surprisingly, upsell products that are already available on your main menu perform better than exclusive upsell-only items.

  • Why it works: Familiarity breeds trust. Customers are more likely to add an extra item they recognize and have perhaps considered before.
  • Data in action: Top-performing merchants featured popular existing items as upsells and saw higher conversion rates than those offering entirely new products at checkout.

Action Step: Select your best-selling or fan-favorite items and add them to your upsell offerings.

Strategy #3: Leverage Seasonal and Novel Offers

Nothing grabs attention like a limited-time offer tied to a holiday or seasonal event.

  • Why it works: Urgency and exclusivity drive action. Customers don't want to miss out on special treats that are only available for a short period.
  • Data in action: A plant-based meal prep service in San Francisco tripled their upsell sales during Halloween! Featuring holiday-themed items like "Dia De Los Muertos Shredded Tofu Beef" and "Halloween Dead Man's BBQ Ribs".

Action Step: Plan ahead for upcoming holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's) and create special upsell items that align with these events.

Strategy #4: Use Discounts Strategically

Discounts can be a double-edged sword. Our data revealed that discounts don't significantly impact upsell conversions unless they're part of a special, time-sensitive offer.

  • Why it works: Overusing discounts can devalue your products. However, a well-timed discount during a seasonal promotion can tip the scales.
  • Data in action: Merchants offering discounted upsells as part of a holiday promotion saw a spike in conversions, while those offering standard discounts saw little to no difference.

Action Step: Reserve discounts for your seasonal or limited-time upsells to maximize their effectiveness.
